Clinic tackles drug, Virst day the ON THE new Seaview drug and alechol treatment clinic in West Vancouver opened up, with the carpenters still adding knocking on the door, the finishing touches, a client came Somehow, despite its disereet loca- tion, word had already gotten out. Some people might: be surprised that a community which, tor five years running has held the honor of being the richest in Canada, could possibly have aleohol and drug problems in its imrdst. But substance abuse knows no sacial bounds and affluence does not preclude drug and alcohol abuse. In fact, as Seaview director Sharon Eakins postulated, affiuence may even make acquisitions of these substances easier and recognition of a problem more difficul:. The idea for a clinic surfaced after a local task foree study on youth alcohol and drug abuse revealed the need for local facili- ties. The Alcohol and Drugs area manager responsible for the North Shore, Don Jarvis, was impressed by the grass-roots approach of the concerned community members who formed the West Vancouver Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Treatment Services Society. fh felt that rhe board (WVADPTSS) was very committed .. and felt responsible for the (alcohol and drug) problem within their midst. Eakins tikes to emphasize that “the whole concept of this clinic is that it is for the comniunity ... from families to young peuple through to seniors.” The clinic's priority is to all West Vancouver residents, but other residents will not be turned away. With 15 years experience in the substance abuse field, Eakins knows thac chat first communica- tion on the part of the client, whether it be a knock on the door or a phone call, must be seen as the beginning of a therapeutic rela- tionship. “My belief is that we should try and serve people as soon as they make that first call,’" she said. After that, if the client wants an assessment, the first available time is given. Clients are invited to at- tend an orientation session where they can check out the facilities, meet the counsellors and dire:tor and find out what services are available to them.
