Manning has ‘trouble with truth’ Dear Editor: Reform Party leader Preston Manning has said that he refused to sign Doug Collins’ nomination papers because he had seven members of the party’s executive council supporting his decision. The trouble with Manning is that he has trouble with the truth. Manning did not tell that the Reform Party’s constitution re- quires that the executive council must have 24 elected members, but that only 12 members have been elected. He also did not tell that only the executive council has any authority to intervene in any nomination. Finally, he did not tell that he had advised Collins as early as Sunday, Oct. 16, (i.e. two days be- fore the nomination meeting) that he would not sign Doug’s papers, at a time when he had not even consulted with his so-called execu- tive council (with the exception of only one of its members). You do not have to be a lawyer to recognize that this council has no legal right to function when on- ly one half of its required member- ship has been elected. Thus, whatever Manning and those folks on that so-called executive council have been doing is unconstitu- tional. His refusal to sign the nomina- tion papers is therefore an unauthorized and officious in- termeddling in the nominating process. So much for Manning and his lecturing Joe Clark about “grassroots democracy”’ and ‘‘fol- lowing the will of the people” etc. It is plain for all to see that he will readily sacrifice his lofty principles whenever it suits him. Thus he is not better than those politicians whom he so readily attacks and criticizes. Gustav R. Kroll West Vancouver More Mailbox: pages 9, 13, 15 ‘CRAIG CLARK FOR N.Y.
