Care for bulbs now

WHILE MOST of the annuals
have come and gone in nearly all
Canadian gardens, tender bulbs
such as dahlias and gladiolus stil!
bloom on into the fall.

When a hard frost finally does
stop their blooming and kills back
their foliage, the time has come to
bring them inside for the winter.
With only a little care now, these
“tender’’ bulbs can prove to be
among the toughest plants in your
garden.

If yours are showing frost dam-
age, dig them up carefully and
shake off as much loose soil as
possible, Let them dry in a frost-
free place for a week or so, until
the soil that is left has dried and
can be shaken off.

At this point, cut back the
foliage to about three cm above

the bulb. They can then be stored
in trays or boxes filled with dry
peat for the winter,

A light powdering with a
fungicide/insecticide will kelp pre-
vent disease and insects, not only
during the winter, but throughout
the next growing season. Tender
bulbs, like cannas and acidan-
theras, should never be allowed to
dry out entirely, so simply store
them in pots full of soil as soon as
you dig them up.

{t is very important to find a
cool, dry place to store the bulbs
for the winter. This can be an
unheated basement or cupboard,
or anywhere where temperatures
remain consistently between five
and 10 degrees C.

Make sure you check them occa-
siona'ly through the winter if they
show signs of drying out.
