Kinloch said the major problem associated with dealing with elder abuse inclucies the abused person’s reluctance to report the problem. Kinloch ‘said seniors abused in their.own homes are ‘often asham- ed to tell anyone that a family” member is abusing: them. They also fear blame. and_ institu- tionalization if the elder abuse is. feported. Kinloch : said | statistics indicate that 23% of -the time a- male” member of the family, usually a son or son-in-law, is the abuser of a senior. . The abuser is usually fi nancially dependent on the person he is abusing. Van firefighters rescue dog from pool THE WEST Vancouver Fire Department recently responded to a rescue call with a difference, When a woman working in her garden on Stevens Drive in the British Properties on the morning of Friday, March 26, heard a splash, she looked through her neighbor’s fence and saw that the homeowner's dog had fallen into a back-yard pool. The neighbors were out, so she called the fire department. Firefighter Tony D'Angelo was part of the canine rescue crew that responded to the incident at 86 Stevens Dr, ‘S found a fence gate and opened it, and there was this dog hanging onto the edge of the paol. “She was bleeding from her hind legs from trying to scratch her way out, and she was shiver- ing pretty bad. | ‘don't think she: could have hung on much. longer,’’ said D’ Angelo. He added that the seighbor estimated the dog had been in the unheated pool for. about 20 minutes, “It was something different for us.
