45 - Wednesday, August 28, 1985 - North Shore News AT NINETEEN, Cristin Fraser’s dream is to pick coffee-beans in Costa Rica. She also hopes to live with native Costa Rican Indians and subsist on cornmeal and beans...all in the, cause of greater international cultural understanding, of course. A graduate from Hand- sworth Secondary, Fraser is one of 21 Canadian youths chosen to participate in the federally sponsored Canada World Youth program. The program matches 21 Cana- dians with 21 youths from a Third World country. The group spends four months in Canada and another four months in the host country. “We live with host fami- lies for the entire period,’’ says Fraser. ‘‘We're ex- pected to work for them or for a group.’’ No pay is in- volved but all of the partici- pants’ expenses are provided for. Fraser wasn't sure what job she would he doing but knew it would involve social work like working at a seniors’ home or agricultural work, The first part of the ex- change takes her to the Eastern townships of Quebec where she will meet her Costa Rican counterparts. Aside from volunteer work, the group will take seminars about international understanding as well as Spanish and culture classes to prepare them for the Costa Rican leg of the ex- change. For English Canadians the exchange is a cultural double-whammy. Not only do they have to adapt to the Quebecois life-style but as soon .as they settle into the Eastern townships they will be off to Costa Rica, Fraser is confident she will succeed with the cultural crash course. Already multi-lingual, she spent a year at age fifteen in another exchange program in In- donesia. Asked whether she. en- joyed the hardships of Third World living Fraser replied that the reason she goes on the exchanges is to become ‘Saware of what's going on in the world.” Leaving for Quebec on September 2, Fraser is ex- cited yet unconcerned about what cultural surprises might await her. Knowing from her experience in Indonesia, ““the greatest culture shock is coming home.” NEWS photo lan Smith OFF SHE ‘poes--with a B.
