The need for such a college arose 15 years ago because of the number of students from Hong Kong wishing to con- tinue their university educa- tion in North America. At that time there were only two universities in Hong Kong. By way of precedent, the YMCA does have a very large English-language school in Hong Kong which has a very high reputation. They pay $3,000 for Grade 12 taken in two semesters, or $4,000 for three semesters covering grades 1! and 12. All students interested are first interviewed by the Heng Kong YMCA and out of the many applications, between 60 to 90 are finally chosen, half from each sex, with the average ages rang- ing between 17 and 25. To attend, applicants must have a student visa, a level of English proficiency, and have taken out private medi- cal insurance. The YMCA is trying to broaden its recruitment base to South America, India and Iran, and advertises its col- lege in international maga- zines, says Clark, The terms ‘visa’ schoo! and ‘visa students’ are used by the public with reference to the YMCA College, but College staff see what they are doing in a broader light.
