the North Shore until Dec. 15.

Her repertoire ranged
from Lionel Ritchie and
Stevie Wonder to Edith Piaf
to songs from stage
musicals, as well as her own
signature tunes.

Even though the show was
almost an hour late starting,
it took her a_ remarkably
short time to turn a restless
packed house into an au-
dience rapturous enough to
give her three ovations by
show’s end.

Interviews and _ perfor-
mances had kept her hopp-
ing between Edmonton,
Vancouver, Los Angelas and
Vegas between Sunday and
Wednesday, so when the
show opened she said she
found herself exhausted

She said she was gratetul
the audience was so recep-
tive, while nervous energy
and a love for performing
kept her going ‘‘The whole
thing of performance is
communication’’ giving
energy to an audience and
receiving it back again.

A tour like the one she’s
on now is quite a change for
Clark, who usually does a

series Of one-might concerts
in Europe, for three or four

Geneva home.

Clark is also the mother of
three’ ‘very nice’ children,
two girls in their twenties,
and a 12 year old boy.

She forces the youngest to
have music lessons partly
because ‘‘nobody forced me.
and now | regret it.”’

Her successful music ca-
reer began as a child during
the war, broadcasting
overseas to. the soldiers
While Vera Ivnn was the
voice of wives and
girlfriends, Petula Clark
represented the voice of the
children at home. Looking
back she agrees she had a

She marned a Frenchman
in her mid-twenties and is
now completely conversant
with French language and
culture.

‘*‘Parisian audiences are
difficult?’ she admits, and
although she’s had more hits
in French than in English,
France was the only country
where Downtown wasn’t a
hit. But as the French ver-
sion was ‘Dans le ton’ she
believes something was lost
in the translation.
