cetylene leak caused
ire in N. Van workshop

ACETYLENE leaking from
a tank in a workshop among
a Lynnmour industnal com-
plex burst into flame in the
early hours of Tuesday
morning.

A man living ncarby in a
trailer heard an initial explo-
sion and then another blast
and called North Vancouver
District Fire Department
shortly before 5 a.m.

Damage from the blast at

1422 Crown Street was
primarily smoke, although a
blowtorch of flame scored a

wall in the building and
burned through rubber
hoses.

A fire inspector said the
thick smoke had largely
been responsible for putting
out the fire.

The inspector found the
acetylene tank was near a
water heater and had been

“I am positive that when
the water heater thermostat
kicked on it was cnough to
light it,” he said.

The fire department has
arranged for the water
heater to be inspected by the
manufacturers.

The inspector said of the
incident: “It was very close
and they were very lucky. It
could have been major. All
the potential was there.”

A ROBBER held up the
Super Valu store at
Westlynn Mall Monday
morning and when he

became impatient with |

the pace the robbery
was going he fired a
warning shot.

The gunman was wearing
a motorcycle helmet with a
dark glass visor which com-
pletely masked his identity.

He went into the Super
Valu store at about 10:30
a.m. and made his way to the
office, where he found the

The robber produced a
handgun and demanded cash
but the produce manager
said he did not know the
combination to the safe,
unaware the door was un-
locked at the time.

At that point the gunman
fired a shot.

A police spokesman said:
“He became impatient and
fired a warning shot into
some envelopes to hurry him
up and show him he meant
business.”

The robber left the store

with an undetermined sum
of money and several cheques
and is believed to have
escaped on a motorcycle.

One park will have two names

EMERALD PARK will have
a split personality soon if
North Vancouver City
council approves a policy
committee meeting recom-
mendation.

The committee recom-

Hammersley Park to honour
