Al2 - Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1981 - North Shore News FROM PAGE A1 Blackburn also came in for some criticism at the meeting, including charges by Alderman Bill Sorenson that the two were using the Rufus Park issue as a launch pad for their own political careers and that they were trying to “paint a black picture of all landlords.” The 111!-unit townhouse development on Rufus Drive and Cedar Village Road is on City-owned land on which Cressey has a 60-year lease. About 70 of the residents appealed to the City as. Cressey's landlord last week for help in their fight against Cressey, which isn't providing proper main- tenance and is boosting rents by about $200 a month, they say. Council voted last week to ask Cressey to meet the tenants by Friday and to ask the company to appear as a delegation. at Monday’s council meeting. No Cressey representative showed up Monday, and the, company also ignored the meeting with the tenants, Richmond said. Cressey President Cressey sent a letter to council refusing the meetings, because, he said, “the matter is being handled by the’ Rentalsman and it is N.E. inappropriate for us to report to anyone else at this time.” In the letter which was read aloud by City Ad- ministrator Ed Raymond, Cressey said he was willing to sit down with City canncil and staff at any time to discuss the company’s obligations as the City’s tenant but contended that he hasn't received any specific complaints from either the renters or the City. He continued, “We are extremely proud of Rufus Park. It is one of the better- maintained properties on the North Shore.” A visibly angry Greg Richmond said he didn't know what Cressey was talking about. A specific list of tenant grievances was supplied to Cressey representative Ronda MacDonald, he said. “I'm extremely angry about this denial of the information supphed.” His voice rising in anger, he went on: “Either he (Cressey) doesn't know what his incompetent staff are doing or he isn't telling the whole truth.” Cressey must know of tenant complaints, he ad- ded, because the company has since acted on some of those complaints. Council voted to act on Cressey’s suggestion and meet with the company, preferably at Rufus Park, said Alderman Stella Jo Dean, originator of the motion. Only Alderman Gary Payne was opposed. Alderman Bill Sorenson said Cressey’s actions “gives responsible landlords a bad Mame and gives advocates like Mr. Richmond and Mr. Blackburn a chance to paint a black picture of all lan- dlords.” , Sorenson went on to criticize Blackburn and Richmond: for denouncing all landlords, businesses, governments and others that oppose them. He said he was bothered by the NSTA’s involvement in the issue. When council was con- sidering another item in- volving the North Shore Tenants Association, after Blackburn and Richmond had left, Sorenson wondered whether they “are two guys who are running for council and getting a headstart on the rest of us.” Rufus Park residents in the audience, some of whom had to sit in the aisles, had to be warned a few times, by both Mayor Jack Loucks and Alderman Frank Marcino, to stop cheering. and booing during the meeting.
