C17-Sunday News, October 12, 1980 Vancou A littie care will produce results If you want a beautiful, healthy lawn when the robins come around again, take a little time out now to treat your lawn properly. The fall feeding is con- sidered the most important one of the year. It wiil protect and nourish your lawn during the cold winter months ahead. Choose a fall fertilizer to promote winter hardiness, with low first numbers (nitrogen) and higher middle (phosphorus) and __ last numbers (potash). Look for 3-6-10 fertihzers and fall promote thicker grass while the phosphorus helps promote vital root development and prevent winter diseases. The main reason such care is emphasized at this time is that during carly fall days, most of the grass regrowth takes place. A good feeding will help the grass plants to continue producing and expanding new roots, even after the first frost. The lawn also needs additional! protection against the “winterkill” of diseases such leaving it patchy, a suitable fungicide should be used that is specifically recom- mended for the problem when the air temperature drops, below 42 F for more than two days. Keep in mind that mowing is just as important in the fall as im the summer, if not more so. and you should keep on mowing right until winter is definitely here. Between 2'4 — 3 in. high is sufficient and be sure to pick up the clippings. All this will keep summer turf disease mould and mildew. Another unexpected effect of leaving your grass long and not picking up the clippings is the possibility of mice living in its protection over the winter. If you suspect mildew (a whitish skim on the surface) apply a dusting sulphur. You can water mght up until the ground freezes. Eventually, as the ground gets wetter, the grass will need less thorough soakings. lf you really want to make Prepare your lawn now for spring idea. Many winterized fertilizers contain “Killex” - a commercial name for weed controllers. Preparing for a beautiful and healthy lawn next spring now is well worth it. Precautions like these, properly executed, help create the perfect lawn. WV building permits up The cost of building in West Vancouver is going up ——- in some cases as much as 20 per cent.
