A pilot project whereby

people convicted of criminal

code offences will have the
option of working out their
fines in community service,
was unveiled today by
Attorney-General Garde
Gardom.

“The purpose of the
project,” said Gordon, “is to
determine if it is practical

and effective to permit
‘offenders to ara
community work as

alternative to incarceration
in default of payment of
fines.”

The attorney-general said
a pamphlet explaining the
program is being given to
offenders who are cligible
and those who are interested
are being directed to a
community service officer of
Corrections Branch in
Victoria,
Howard Society in Nanaimo.
