MAILBOX Remove Deep Cove docks Dear Editor: tt was with pleasure that 1 read your balanced =o and —sreason- able News Viewpoint on the pro- posed seawalk from Cates Park to Deep Cove. Two years ago, when a seawall through Cates Park was first pre- posed, 1 gathered a petition of several hundred signatures asking that the park be left’ untouched and that instead a seawall be built for Deep Cove. Many of the signators received rather abrupt replies stating that no seawall was proposed, and that never would such a major outlay be consid- ered! When the project resurfaced this year, public meetings became clouded by confusion between those wishing to leave the park unspoilt but still wishing to have a seawall to the Ccve, and those wishing to protect private water- front preperty. Having been an ardent sup- porter of the seawall between park and cove, | have come to accept the argument that this is a pre- ject for which there simply is not enough money at present. Never- theless, that area could be made accessible to pedestrians for muck less money than the cost of a ma- jor seawalk. At the momen?, the beach area between Cates and the Cove is virtually inaccessible to any but the hardiest and most devermined waiker. The residents who own preperty backing onto the beach have built incredibly ugly and N. Between the docks garden trash and clip- pings are thrown, which provides avery effective deterrent to pleasure walking. The magnificent view along that stretch of coastline is totally obscured from the beach because of the height and density of the docks. 1} would suggest that council concentrate on opening up all the lanes from Roslyn and Lowry to Provide beach access. Further- more, although [| understand that this would involve the federal government, | would suggest that the high density of private and obstructing docks be removed and one or two government docks in- stalled. Then this spectacular length of coastline could be enjoyed by ail the taxpayers of North Van- couver, and not merely by a handful of waterfront property owners.
