Some tips on travelling with baby

I WONDER how much Wee Willie Windsor
enjoyed his holiday in Australia. I can promise
you that the average parents (with or without the

services of nannies and

all) wouldn't get such a

great charge out of it! Babies are risky travellers.
Planes hurt their ears and heat makes them itch.
After all, would you enjoy 110°F. with a soggy
bundle of wrapping around your backside?

I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. W.
didn't have to spend the
entire flight passing little
Willie back and forth from
lap to lap, as the rest of us
might but I'll bet that baby
screams just as loudly as
your little Archie.

Oh well, when I was a
young mother, I did dumb
things, too. For the record:
Unless it is absolutely
necessary: Babies and small
children are better left at
home when parents take
long distance vacations.

Should it be necessary,
however, there are certain
things that the travelling
parent can do to ease the
burden on themselves - and
Wilhie.

PREPARATION:

It is essential that you
provide food and formula for
the entire joumey, plus
enough left over in case you
are delayed. Well in advance
of departure, get baby
comfortably switched to
easily portable groceries.

The best method I found
with formula is to use the dry

powdered kind. Prepare a
number of sterile bottles
filled with sterile water. Pre-
measure enough dry stuff
into a plastic sandwich bag
for each feeding. The water
bottles don’t require
refrigeration until the
powder is added. Warming is
unnecessary - room.temp. is
quite almght for all but the
frailest infant. Get baby used
to this brew well in advance.
Discard any leftovers after
you've fed the baby and
wash the bottle well with
soap in the washroom.

solid foods, cereals travel

the nuisance of tin cans, do.
If not, bing your own can
opener, do not feed the baby
directly from the tin and
either discard leftovers or
ask that they be refmgerated
for you. What do you want
to bet that you'll forget to
retrieve them when = you
deplane?

Disposable plastic spoons
fit better into baby’s mouth
than airline teaspoons. You
don’t need to bother with
dishes - grab one off your
meal tray. They're sterilized,
in case you worry about

Pack plenty of paper
diapers - never rely on the
airline to provide. Also pack
a square of plastic sheeting
(bridge table size tablecloths
are great).

Naturally, you'll want
several changes of clothes
for the baby - I found the
one-piece terry suits the
easiest to manage. Include a
sweater and a bonnet - some
planes are downright cold.

Also include an apron for
yourself plus an extra
blouse. Don’t bother arguing
that your baby doesn’t spit
