6 ~ Horth Shore News - Wednesday, November 10, 1999 north shore news VIEWPOINT Sounds of si SJEYRE making noise about silence. And it’s a silence that speaks volumes. The Royal Canadian Legion wants all Canadians to pause in silence for two minutes at 11] a.m. tomorrow. Its naembers have rnore than solidar- ity of thought oa their minds. Their Remembrance Day message is one of gratitude and of honour and, ultimate- ly, of peace. As Legion Dominion president Chuck Murphy has pointed ous, the “Two-Minute ‘Wave of Silence” pro- vides much more than a universal ces- sation of human static in the hurley burley of the modern world. “It will,” he says, “serve as an elo- ‘quent tribute to the 116,000 young ..men and.women who died defending ’: our country during the 20th century.” “" Te will also heip focus-our collective : DK bere storm has raged i in th Lower Mainland since carly October, when Rogers reduced election coverage. - Rob Carver, Rogers’ ‘Director of Community Progranimi ig, announced on the Ingram Show that Rogers ‘will air mayoral candidates. The growing distance that most Canadians have from the savage reali- ties of war continues to erode the meaning of Remembrance Day for upcoming generations. Each year the number of those who fought and sur- vived the 20ch century’s two world wars grows fewer and with them dies the remembrance of war’s real horvors. Until a few decades ago, the obser- vance of a two-minute silence on Remembrance Day was commonplace in Canada. It’s time to make it com- monplace again. Not only to honour those who sacrificed all in the name cf democracy, but to ensure that what led to that sacrifice never gets a chance to take root again.
