north shore news MAIL Box park f aa Dear Editor: The Soo Coalition for Sustainable Forests Society is a non-profit organiza- tion with over 1,000 members. It is based in the Sea to Sky corridor. , We would like to strongly urge the | GVRD to resist the efforts of WCWC to Bhave the Scymour Demonstration Forest made into a park. . This forest is used extensively by BCIT, UBC and Cap College for ‘their forestry and fish and wildlife courses, Bco-op education for high schoo! stu- medents, Ministry of Forests research and training, and skill training under Forest ae Renewal BC. “=, School tours provide invaluable hands-on experience for students in atimber management, fish and wildlife management, and the Forest Practices Overcoming ‘90s road rage proximity to the Lower Main and com- munities that it is possible. Forest tours for tourists are conduct- ed regularly and are, we understand, very popular. Forestry has been a ve important factor in making B.C. what it is today. It is a large part of our history, our her- itage, today’s culrure in urban areas and our children’s: future. This demonstration forest was creat- ed for the purpose of live forest educa- tion. One of the biggest needs B.C. has right now is this kind of special place people can sec and fearn first- hand about B.C.’s forests and forest practices. Across the North Shore the majority of the area is closed watershed or park. This relatively small area provides a unique opportunity for the educators of the Lower Mai sas well as outside In its present form, it provides the greatest good tor the greatest. number of people. Recreation and forest educa- tion can tin the same area. It is only a relative few like WCWC that say they cannot. We strongly support the continued efforts of the GVRD in maintaining, this unique educational forest for today’s population and future generations to use, learn from, and enjoy. Pve been reading recently about “road rage” and I’ve ipyee been chuckling to myself because I realize my own dri- ving, skills: are part of these articles. “Yer T am also a complete Bhypocrite : because I can't Hstand: other drivers who exhibit these same traits. ‘Around 7:15 p.m. on Halloween night, at the cor- Miner of William Avenue and Lynn Valley Road, my car died. I had the usual bunch of losers pulling the finger at me and honking, as if I stopped in the road for the mere enjoyment of clogging traf- fic, when 2 Scottish man ina white Mazda pulled over to help me. I felt so guilty at his act of kindness because in a situa- tion where I would have dri- ven by and = thought, “Sucker!” to myself, he pushed my car to the: side of the road, arranged for BCAA to pick me up using his car phone, and inspected the engine. I never deserved this gen- crosity on a dark Halloween night from a total stranger. But I wish good on this man and because of him, I’ve been inspired to be kinder to my fellow drivers and ease up on my own self-defeating case of “road rage.” Kirsten Wilhelm North Vancouver must be legible (preferably typewritten) and include your name, full address and telephone number.
