UB Siccording ‘to “BCCLA Biack out A 60-year-old West Vancouver woman and her 86-year-old mother were seriously injured on Thursday in a sin- _- @ie-car.crash at 1st Street and Philip Avenue. A North Vancouver RCMP spokesman said that the accident occurred after the 60-year-old driver blacked out and hit a pole. Both women were taken to hospital with broken -~ Jegs. Their injuries are not tife threatening. The daughter and mother were trapped in the 1982 red Honda. The - ear is a write-off, said police. The 86-year-old passenger was visiting from Germany. No names were released. Executive Director John Westwood, she spoke often and forcefully in the media on behalf of the association, and earned the respect not only of thase who shared the associa- tion’s views, but of those who disagreed’ with its positions on the many sensitive and dif- ficult issues in which the asso- ciation became involved. Her influence was strong in the association's positions on campus speech codes, on affirmative action, on the reg- ulation of reproductive tech- nologies, Ga “bubble zones” around .abortion clinics; and on many of the BCCLA‘s frecdom of speech positions. Westwood said that on 3 day-to-day basis, Ms. Stockholder was the associa- tion's driving force. She rarely turned down an opportunity ta meet with groups and individuals ro help them in their efforts so seck justice, to persuade deci- sion makers te do che right thing, or to explain the BCCLA’s position on difficult issues. According to Westwood, Ms. Srockholder’s greatest contribution Jay in her abilicy to draw on 2 broad range of sources when helping to develop policy and advocat- ing for civil liberties.
