New delivery service
offers Langley crops

KENNEDY Cranswick’s idea for an
organic food delivery company
almost died before it had a chance
to blossom.

Bur, tortunately, the North Vancouver
man’s business was rescued by a woman
familiar to herb shoppers at West Vancouver's
Park Royal Shopping Centre.

Cranswick said he had been looking for a
farm in the Fraser Valley rhat would share his
dream of starting up an organic food delivery
business to service the North Shore,

His idea called for him to work directly
with the farmer instead of ordering the food
from a large warehouse full of imported food.

“It's just like the Scortish don’t want to
buy whisky from Japan,” he reasons.

came up empty. Just before he was about to
give up, Bernice Neff, the former owner of
Herbs and Things in Park Royal. called.

Neff) who lives on an cight-hectare (20-
acre) organic farm in Langley, agreed to sup-
ply the business, which now offers all sorts of
organic truits, vegetables, meats, and special-
tv items like salsa, pesto sauce and tzatsiki.

Although Cranswick originally intended
to keep the delivery focus on the North
Shore, he's started to branch out to
Vancouver and Burnaby since the company’s
June 1996 inception.

Kennedy now provides delivery to more
than 200 homes, and Hildegard, his
Austrian-born wife, organizes delivery
routes, designs the leaflets and looks after the
bookkeeping.

“We ove it,” said Cranswick. “1 like hav-
ing the freedom of doing exactly what I want
ta do. [ts not like a big money-making
thing. [t's a way of life.”

Duriug the winter, said Neff, some pro-
duce is brought up from California. But
come the end of April or May, she hopes to
be delivering her produce again.
