Pm not a great fan of the Bentzen tunnel plan, but at least it’s a beginning to address some of the traffic mess. Environmental impact of this Bentzen island: restriction should be placed on its size and kind of development. Coal Harbor and the shore- lines around the beach and the yacht club are already not a retty sight as the waters are cing, trapped and movement of water seems minimal, Implement a moderate- heavy toll to both the tunnel and an upgraded Lions Gate Bridge sufficient to deter some unnecessary cross-harbor traf : Dear Editor: According . to David Mitchell (Friday, Aug. 9) _ there must be hundreds of. thousands of latent homsex- uals in B.C. alone, because that is a conservative estimate fic. It will also provide for maintenance costs. The taxpay- er will be paying for it one way or another by taxes, deficit or tolls, what’s the difference? We don’t want to be too negative with the NDP, The smartest achievement was perhaps to proceed with the Westview Interchange. Bur then should the new: crossing be tied directly to the Upper Levels with the fast of the inter- change at Westview? Again the taxpayers would have to pay for a piecemeal solution. This is the ultimate test of incompe- tence of the NDP and their traffic ministers. Fees necessary for healthy medicare Dear Editor: Re: Noel Wright and medicare, In the continuous discussion about so- called two-tier medicine it is well to remem- ber that nothing is ever as simple as it appears to be, and this is no exception. If you were falsely accused of some heinous crime and the evidence was stacked against you, you would sell your car, mort- gaye your house and borrow against all your assets in order to get the best possible legal defense. How much more if vou were strick- ent with a deadly disease which the local doc- tors did not seem to be able to treat? [tis not only the rich who cross the border to get bet- Bus chealers think again ter treatment. In general, doctors earn far more in the U.S. than they do here. Asa result many (but not all) of the best Canadian doctors move south, We are losing some of our best unnee- essarily, If all patients ~ other those on welfare or otherwise living at or below the poverty line — would be required to pay a fee of say $10 before being attended by a physician or entering the hospital, this would reduce the unnecessary visits and provide a considerable boost to the health finds. C.D.L. Dyke West Vancouver : B.C. Transit does the best they can with the resources they have. From fare evasion Dear Editor: I agree with Diane M. Cseh in the Aug. 16 North Shore News that the buses in North Vancouver, as well as West Vancouver, are over- loaded, often out of the kind- ness of bus drivers who do not want to leave anyone behind. I also agree that a fully loaded bus is more of a safety hazard than a half empty one, but these buses are driven by highly skilled professionals and statistics show it is safer to travel by a bus than by car. It irks me that Ms. Cseh suggests B.C. Transit is oper- ating at full capacity to turn a profit. alone, B.C. Transit loses enough revenue to cover the purchase of an additional 100 new buses a year. Cheaters, please consider this the next time the bus is crowded and you're thinking of swindling a ride.
