NVC raise irks Fearnley

‘ NORTH Vancouver City Council
officially gave itself a raise October
‘20 with ardent opposition from
only. one councillor.

Rookie councillor Bob Fearnley was alone
itr his opposition to the bylaw, which was
passed 6-1.

: The 2% raise — retroactive to Jan. 1, 1996
— will make the city’s councillors the highest
paid public servants of a Lower Mainland
municipality with fewer than 50,000 resi-
dents.

Fearnley, who’s against the retroactive
nature of the raise, will not benefit from the

retroactive pay because he was elected to city
council for the first time in November 1996.

The new annua! saiary for the mayor is
$57,225 while the councillors receive
$19,075.

A councillor serving for a two-month
period as acting mayor will get an extra $530
per month for the effort.

In 1995, the city’s indemnity rate was
$18,712 for councillors and $56,136 for the
mayor.

In comparison, West Vancouver’s mayor
receives $51,000 and councillors receive
$19,000. A five-member volunteer Council
Indemnity Review Committee took almost a
year to work out a fair formula to c.lculate
the wages for city politicians.
