More sports facilities needed Dear Editor: It is with great sadness that I read Boh Tarplett’s letter in the North Shore News, Oct. 2 — “Schools shouldn't bankroll reere- ation.” He obviously has not fol- lowed the Caulfeild school project and its development for the past four years as many of us have. The fact that the West Vancouver School Board is $1 mil- fion short on the project is because of poor planning and nothing else. They said there would be no blasting on the site and yet they have had to blast. About two years ago many expert citizens warned them that this may be necessary and asked about the possible budget. No direct answer was ever given. ties, good PLE. cla teams bring to the life of a school Also the original idea was to tie in a recreational facility with the school and that the board office denies this now is unbelievable, What bothers me most about Mr. Tarplett’s letter is the notion that the responsibility of the educa- tion system is not recreation and that schools without gyms should he considered. This gentleman has obviously forgotten the joy that good facili- es and sports population, We are short-changing our chil- dren by not providing enough gym space in the schools. Let me leave Mr. ‘Tarplett with one thought: how would he fike it if his school board was bankrolling a project where they were supporting the destruction of a 30-year-old school, which seats 1,000 students, for a school that halds anly 750 (with smaller PLE. and counselling offices than at Hliliside ta mention a few design glitzes) and thus the foss of anather piece af public land? NO In Ottawa, on November 3rd, the Standing Committee on Citizenship and reviewed the latest appointments to the Immigration and Refugee Board. QUALIFIED CANDIDATES? During the meeting, Reform’s tmmigration Critic, Art Hanger, revealed T that one of the appointees, Mr Inderit # Bal, had come to Canada as a sailor on Ha ship in 1976 and had remained in 1 Canada as an illegal immigrant until he obtained landed immigrant status by marrying a Canadian woman. Mr Bal also admitted that during a radio interview, while running for nomination as a Liberal candidate in the last J election, he had said that “nobody came f to Canada tegally since 1972 in my opinion.” Unfortunately, questioning by the committee failed to get to the bottom fof a suggestion that Mr Bal had subsequently divorced his Canadian wife and brought a wife to Canada from i india. Mr Bal became politically active in 1984 “when the Government of India attacked the Golden Temple in India." He joined the World Sikh Organization fand admitted to getting involved in “disruptive activities” although the nature f of these activities was not revealed. He f was introduced to Mr Marchi, who is now the Immigration Minister, in 1987 and was a member of the Liberal Party in Mr Marchi’s Riding. Mr Bal says he has a f B.A. from india but told the committee f that this was the equivalent of Canadian Grade 12, Reform's exposure of his past forced i Mr Bal to resign last Sunday. He will not E get to collect $85,000 per year as an Appointee to our Immigration and } Refugee Board. Mr Marchi should be 5 very embarrassed by this development. The Immigration Minister, in reply to a Reform question in Parliament, confirmed that the Refugee Settlement Program now costs $700 million par year. In addition, a confidential report, | which my office obtained from the Department of Finance under Access To § Information, identifies present immigration levels as a possible source of our high levels of unemployment. } (Any Reform MP saying this gets | labelled as a racist but apparently it is acceptable coming (rom the Department J of Finance.) . The report explains that unemploy- ment levels have been drifting upwards during tha same period that the number of immigrants of working age has been rising. On page 14 it states that “classes of immigrants such as family | reunification and refugees tend to experience difficulty entering the job j market since they are admitted on { humanitarian and equity consider- ations”. | In 1993 Canada’s unemployment rate, at 11,29, was the highest amongs! the G-7 countries and 6th highest on the 7 list of the 24 OECD countries. Despite tiis, we accepted immigrants at double the rate of other immigration-receiving countries on a per capita basis. As a result, the cost of settlement programs, ESL training, and administration is becoming unmanageable. Unfortunately | Mr. Marchi’s recently announced immigration quotas do not address this BC.
