HEY SAY maybe there was a side to her | didn’t know, that our friends didn’t know, a hid- den side... When Georgia Arnott disappears the night of a poolside party, the speculation about her ‘‘real”’ character begins. Was this the responsible saintly person everyone thought she was? Or did her disappearance point to some dark secret unknown to her husband, friends and co-workers? Executive recruitor Jane Tregar, a friend of Georgia's, gets in-' timately involved in Georgia's per- sonal and working life as she at- tempts to retrace the steps that may have fead to her friend's disappearance. Assuming Georgia’s position as head of a software development team, Jane quickly realizes that work conditions were less than ideal. The software team, made up of brilliant minds and strong per- sonatities, was not a model of co- operation. Jane meets the threesome at a party shortly after Georgia's disap- earance. There is the pasty-lodk- ing Ivor, red-bearded Red and the repressed-looking Catherine. . They are preparing for what is supposed to be a fun midsummer toy boat race at the Malcolm Mor- ton estate. Morton owns Prospero, the. software company they work ore Jane notices the three are fiercely competitive avid -. thoroughly obsessed with winning the race: Red makes a comment to Jane about being wary of “industrial espionage.” . Suspicion mounts when Morton comments, “There are people who play fair and people who don't.” Marton is concerned about - replacing Georgia; there's the confidentiality problem with a ground-breaking piece of software. And with Mortori having rescued Prospero from receivership, everything was riding on t e suc- cess of the Crystal Project, the new Barbara Black BOOK REVIEW . software which Georgia was helping develop. With some prodding from Georgia's distraught husband Simon, Jane unwittingly offers herself up to act as head of the software teant. Once on the job, she fearns from reading Georgia’s project diary that ali was not well with the Crystal Project. Scheduled for its last round of testing before the product release, certain team members had balked at releasing the product on the market. There was tension among the ranks and some rank-pulling. While Jane is at Prospero at- tempting to keep the team in line, Georgia’s body is found. Gradually, the insights into Georgia's life and death mount as Jane gets to the truth of the matter. She comes face-to-face with her own adage that truth is liberating. And not just with regard to her _ friend's life. It’s a well-crafted mystery God- frey has written, Her style is soher and matter-of-fact — no descrip- tions of blue fog or rapturous paragraphs on human behaviour, just carefully disguised clues and observations. Jane is a simple enough charac- ter, with problems of her own. Her husband has custody of her two children and lives in Switzerlnd. While the investigations about Georgia continue, Jane is embroil- ed in a cat-and-mouse custody bat- tle with her manipulative ex-hus- band, a game of intrigue much like the one Being played out at Pro- spero and within Georgia’ s circle of friends. ‘And although Jane is the disad- vantaged player in the custody battle, she successfully plays her “opponents” at Prospero like a chess master.
