Considering the
Quebec question

“SHOULD QUEBEC have
its way?” is a commonly
asked question. In a world
moving toward a new world
order, world peace and
unification, Quebec ‘vants
out.

not? Why shouldn't
Quebec gain its freedom and
become a country on its own?
That is what they’ve always
wanted.

A_ hypothetical situation could
be that Quebec is on its own and
Canada has lost its largest pro-
vince. What are the Maritime
provinces to do? Well, they've got
three choices.

The first is to join Quebec, the
second is to join the United States
and the third is to join as one.

In all three cases, Canada will
no longer exist as it once was. In
the years to come, other provinces
might also want out.

It will most likely happen. We
know and the politicians know.
Once again, we are stalling the
process as we did several years
ago during the 1982 separation
vote.

So it all comes to the final
question. Will you be the one to
decide the future of this great
country?

What can the average non-
voting-age student do? We often
feel we have no say and no con-

could all picket down streets as
they did during the Vietnam War.

We could write ietters to **good
ol’ Brian,*’ but these actions
would probably go unnoticed.
And if noticed, we as Canadians
would receive a photocopied form
letter from the Head of State
stating that there's nothing they
can do.

Distressed and burned out, !
was forced to move out armed
with a pencil and paper to search
for student opinions. This is what
I found out:

Allison P., 17: There are some
good points and bad points to
Quebec leaving. The good points:
Quebec will shut wp and stop put-
ting up a fuss. The bad points are:
1 think that it’s stupid for us to
20 through another country to get
to a part of our own,

it will also affect our trading.
For example. if we want to send
something to the Maritime pro-
vinces, we would have to go
through Quebec and they would
have their own taxes and tariffs.
It makes no sense paying taxes to
send items to another part of our
own country.

T also think that with this they
will have the three choices: join’
with themselves, join the United
States, or join Quebec. What will
be left of Canada?

My dad’s from New Brunswick
and I’ve lived there. That’s the
reason ! have such a strong opi-
nion.

Personally I don’t like Quebec,
but I do have a concern for the
rest of Canada. There's many dif-
ferent cultures besides the French.

As a child, visiting Quebec with
my dad, who had littl French-
speaking skills, we were unable to
order through a Burger King
drive-through because we did not
speak French.

They told us to go away and
that they did not understand us.
So we did not get our food. I
can’t understand how come
Quebec won’t accept us when we
