Photo series investigates Arab lifestyle Hoiocaust exhibit a testament to courage of rescuers FOR THREE years, Gay Block and Matka Drucker interviewed and photograpined people who hid, protected and saved Jews in Europe during the Second World ar. Through their own stories and images from family scrapbooks * and albums, the exhibition Rescuers of the Holocaust became a testament to these individuals — tens of thousands of ordinary people who acted with extraor- dinary courage and compassion to save human lives. The exhibition will be presented at Presentation House Jan. 31 to March 8. Block has been a_ portrait photographer since 1975 and has photographed the Jewish com- munity for over 10 years. A reci- pient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, she recently provided the portraits for Fifty Texas Artists (Chronicle Books, 1986). Her work is in many public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre for Creative Photography; .Univer- sity of Arizona, Tucson; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Drucker is a veteran writer in the area of Jewish culture. She is the author of many books for young people, of which several have been nominees for the Na- tional Jewish Book Award. Her latest book, Eliezer Ben Yehuda: Father of Modern Hebrew, (Lodestar/Dutton), won the ADL Janusz Korczak Prize. Rescuers of the Holocaust is or- ganized and circulated by Cu- ratorial Assistance in Los Angeles. it is currently touring North America and will travel to Europe. The exhibition ts accompanied by a book published by Curatorial Assistance, to be launched simul- taneously at the Presentation House Gallery opening, and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition will run opposite a thematically-related show of re- cent work by Vancouver artist Nomi Kaplan, dealing with the holocaust and the compiexities of representing history. Block and Drucker will par- ticipate in a free special event on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m., called Artist’s Talk which will include a discussion panel with Vancouver Holocaust rescuers and survivors.
