32 - Wednesday, May 15, 1991 — North Snore News UPON MEETING Allison Rice it quickly becomes obvious that she is a person of unusual talents and tastes.especially for a !5-year-old. A lew years ago she chose to compete in badminton rather than the far more glamorous game of tennis. And while she was excelling in bad- minton, she continued to pursue her in- terest in classical music as a violinist. Her perseverance has paid off: Rice has managed to succeed with both badmin- ton racket and violin. This year she became the Canadian under-16 singles badminton champion, winning the gold medal in her first trip to the junior nationals: she was also ac- cepted by the Vancouver Academy of Strings to play for its orchestra. Unfortunately, when her tournament and concert schedules collided, she was forced to assign priorities: she chose the tournament and missed the concert. thereby making herself ineligible to play at any more concerts this year. This pust season, Rice has sapidiy made a name for herself and is part of the Hollyburn Country Club badminton squad that, under the coaching of Zip Dhanani, is bringing a somewhat obscure sport into the spotlight. Hoilyburn players dominated the pro- vincia! badminton scene this past season and Rice has been no exception. At the B.C. junior championships in early March, Rice won the under-l6 singles title and the under-16 doubles title with Nancy Reid. also from Hollyeurn. Going in- to the national final, she faced number- one seed Anthea Poon who had defeated Rice last December. Rice says she turned this to her ad- vantage and came from behind to win the match 8-11, t1-5, 14-4, “I'd trained a lot harder and just went out and did my best. It was kind of good because | had no pressure on me.’ In the 1992 junior nationals, Rice wilt play in the under-19 division where she expects even tougher competition. “I don't expect to do reaily well. Vil try my best, but because everyone else will have so much more experience .. .”” she says. But. as the record shows. Rice's “best” has often been good enough to beat everyone else.
