From page 20 symbolizes the feeling of lost hope. Another painting, this one a still life of a money tree in a glass vase {} actually saw it as a slide), made me feel, tor the first time in a long time, like | wanted to buy art. It’s a straightforward image and yet Holland has managed to con- vey something magical. The vase recalls delicate. thin ice, and the tree's onion-skin-fine ieaves are exquisitely dainty. It is these fine details that make Holland's work so appealing. His ability to capture light in its most natural (and its most beautiful) state is perhaps his greatest strength, Ina painting of Chesterman Beach near Tofino, Holland re- creates the warm, pinky-brown glow of a sunset-lit sky. . In another work, shocks of brilliant light reflect off dramatic, crashing waves pounding against jagged rocks. “Painting,” says Holland, “is all about light and the moment.” KAL@ TIRE RECESSION ale ¥ we K to vALUE . “N. If one were to categorize Holland's suyty, it would be in the fashion of an impressionist-realist: realist in the sense that his images are accurate: impressionistic in his vibrant palette. One thing's for sure: his work is in such great demand these days that Holland can barely keep up with the orders. Last fall he sold all but one of 35 pieces he created for a one-man exhibit at Harrison Gallery, During the same time he secured 20 commissions — some of which he wasn't able to fulfill. “lL get myself into binds nuw and then,’ he confesses, “I'm still recovering from it.” But unlike most successful! gallery artists, Holland abhors the idea of painting just to sell his work, ‘People put ine in a box. Education system trivializes art The public tries to encapsulate you so they can say, ‘Oh, yes, [know Kiff Holland, | have one of his stil hies.’ But Mini contiaually trying to broaden my range rather than nar- row it.” What is so refreshing about Holland is that ne escapes “the box” by criticizing his own work regularly, teaching himself to ap- proach his work differently. So it’s not surprising that he teaches drawing and illustration at Capilano College. Holland received his own childhood education ata Johan- nesburg boarding school which he says he hated at the time, but luoking back realizes “it was one hell of an education.” Luckily for him, the school, which treated fine art with the same importance as academic courses, encouraged him to draw and paint. And that makes the snow- white-haired, bespectacled painter frustrated by the low pricrity the Canadian education system affords art. “The art experience that kids get at school here is trivialized. It’s not treated as an academic sub- ject,” he says. “It’s a pity because as teachers, we have to spend time giving them background that could have been done at the high school level. Some of the kids in my classes have no background in art at all. “And that’s not the schools’ fault, it’s the universities’ fauit. If they would start regarding art as an academic course, they would have to demand certain standards that aren't there now. We would then start producing better artists.” Holland’s art is continually Wednesday, April 3, 1991 - North Shore News - 25 changing: his palette is becoming evermore colorful, expanding into vibrant purples, sky blues and ca- nary yellows. “You start getting frustrated that trees are green so you stan doing something else,” he ex- plains. And while some artists scoff at the idea of analyzing their work, Holland lives by the credo that one’s work demands regular scrutiny. “A lot of people tend not to analyze and they get stuck in a rut. You've got to because, what else are you doing it for? i'm always looking for places | can change things. “My work has changed vasily in the last 20 years, and if it doesn’t change in the next 20 years I'll be terribly unhappy. I'm 48 now and | expect to be produc- pore) ing my best work when I'm 65.
