The show will feature a range of Historical clothes displayed PANACHE IS a vovage into the social and economic history of women as reflected in their chang- ing clothes. Opening Nov. 27 at the Van- couver Museum, this exhibit showcases a fascinating collection of historical garments which tell the story of 200 years of women’s fashions. The show is the pet project of Ivan Sayers, curator of history at Vancouver Museum and wel!- known lecturer on the social! his- tory of costume. Sayers has spent more than 30 yeats studying and collecting his- torical costumes that reflect the ideas and attitudes of the time. The show demonstrates how the evolution of fashion has followed the gradual social emancipation of women. Contrary to most museum exhibits of historical clothing, Panache concentrates primarily on the women who wore the pieces and the social, political and economic conditions which created them. The show illustrates how the {8th and 19th century concept of women as primarily ornamental Everything erena = Fashions Ltd. could ask for at Serena's — selection, service and value objects in a man’s household changed through both desire and necessity, and that the need to have women contributing physi- cally to society indicated the need for modern, emancipated costume. Panache uses clothing to il- lustrate that not only the gar- ments, but the women themselves changed their fashionable ideal to demonstrate changing social at- titudes. The exhibit begins in the Rococo period of the mid-1770Qs, followed by Neo-Classicism. Regency fashions of the 1830s and °40s are shown beside the Neo- Gothic styles of the same period, which is in turn followed by the flamboyant hoop-skirted dresses of the mid-19th century. Bustles replaced hoops during the 1870s and Panache features garments from this pericd which equal those shown in any museum in the world. The show runs at Vancouver Museum, 1100 Chestnut Str., from Nov. 27 to Aug. 31. Admis- sion is $5. For information call the museum at 736-4431. PARK ROYAL S.
