Fisher-Price child’s
car seat recalled

BCAA, IN cooperation with
the Canadian Automobile
Association and Transport
Canada, warns consumers of
a safety problem with the
popular Fisher-Price Car
Seat.

Five thousand seats with
defective metal tongues were
manufactured between Feb.
5 and March 24, 1990. The
metal tongues are supposed
to secure the shield to the
child restraint, but crash
testing by Fisher-Price
revealed the tongue could
break in a moderate to
severe collision, increasing
the risk of injury to a child
in the seat.

Two thousand of the
Fisher-Price Child Car Seats
(Model 9102) have been sold
in Canada. The remaining
3,000 seats are being remov-
ed from retail stores to be
repaired by authorized per-

re-stesting, felt strongly that
re-testing on the basis of age
was a violation of their
human rights.

The elderly feel that the
decision to stop driving
should be shared between
their doctor, themselves and
their famities.

It is no understatement
that the loss of driving privi-
leges has a great impact on
the elderly. Faced with the
prospect, many who were
unable said they would have
to move closer to public
transit routes.

Others said they would
have to spend more time
closer to home.

Rothe states emphatically
that we cannot solve a
serious problem in seciety by
fixating on a single cause.
He says that behind the ap-
pearances and the accident
statistics for the elderly are
factors that need to be con-
sidered before we can devel-
op meaningful improve-
ments.

He suggests that an educa-
tional traffic safety/driving
program be developed that
focuses on defensive driving,
myths about the elderly
driver and self esteem. The
physical nature of aging
must be better understood,
as must traffic flaws and
automobile technology.

Rothe says the media and
organizations or institutions
involving the eiderly can
play a vital role in delivering
honest, simple and direct
messages about driving and
traffic safety.

seat. If it falls between Feb.

request a free modifier kit.
The kit will include all the
necessary replacement parts,
tools, and simple instruc-
tions to repair the seat.

Seat owners should have
the unit nearby when they
call. Fisher-Price customer
service staff may need addi-
tional information about the
seat to ensure it is one of the
affected models.

not affect the Fisher-Price
Infant Car Seat Model 9149.
