38 - Friday, April 27, 1990 - North Shore News AU TOM GTI Fisher-Price child’s car seat recalled BCAA, IN cooperation with the Canadian Automobile Association and Transport Canada, warns consumers of a safety problem with the popular Fisher-Price Car Seat. Five thousand seats with defective metal tongues were manufactured between Feb. 5 and March 24, 1990. The metal tongues are supposed to secure the shield to the child restraint, but crash testing by Fisher-Price revealed the tongue could break in a moderate to severe collision, increasing the risk of injury to a child in the seat. Two thousand of the Fisher-Price Child Car Seats (Model 9102) have been sold in Canada. The remaining 3,000 seats are being remov- ed from retail stores to be repaired by authorized per- Driver testing debated From page 37 be discriminating on basis of age. Those 75 or older, who were more often opposed to re-stesting, felt strongly that re-testing on the basis of age was a violation of their human rights. The elderly feel that the decision to stop driving should be shared between their doctor, themselves and their famities. It is no understatement that the loss of driving privi- leges has a great impact on the elderly. Faced with the prospect, many who were unable said they would have to move closer to public transit routes. Others said they would have to spend more time closer to home. Rothe states emphatically that we cannot solve a serious problem in seciety by fixating on a single cause. He says that behind the ap- pearances and the accident statistics for the elderly are factors that need to be con- sidered before we can devel- op meaningful improve- ments. He suggests that an educa- tional traffic safety/driving program be developed that focuses on defensive driving, myths about the elderly driver and self esteem. The physical nature of aging must be better understood, as must traffic flaws and automobile technology. Rothe says the media and organizations or institutions involving the eiderly can play a vital role in delivering honest, simple and direct messages about driving and traffic safety. Re-examination is a policy decision that should be carefully reviewed by motor the sonnel. Anyone with one of these seats Should check the date of manufacture stamped on the bottom of the instruction label on the back of the car seat. If it falls between Feb. § and March 24, 1990, they should cali Fisher-Price toll-free at 1-800-327-9980 to request a free modifier kit. The kit will include all the necessary replacement parts, tools, and simple instruc- tions to repair the seat. Seat owners should have the unit nearby when they call. Fisher-Price customer service staff may need addi- tional information about the seat to ensure it is one of the affected models. BCAA and Transport Canada advise Fisher-Price car seat owners to use an alternative child restraint system (if possible) until ment should do separate physical examinations and decide with the elderly per- son the extent to which he or she is still able to drive safe- ly. If the doctors cannot agree, Rothe says the super- intendent of Motor Vehicles should consult the medical findings and, after an inter- view with family members, make a final decision on licensure. Rothe also says that we must do more to assist the elderly who can no longer drive. The study shows that most elderly motorists do not jook upon current alter- nate transportation choices as especially viable. their free modification kit is received and installed. If another system is not available, continue to use the defective seat until the kit is received. Although the defective restraint will pro- vide reduced levels of pro- tection in severe crashes, it will give adequate protection in less severe collisions. This public notice does not affect the Fisher-Price Infant Car Seat Model 9149. BCAA, in association with the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and Transport Canada operates a child restraint information program, Anyone in B.C. with a question on the use or installation of a_ child restraint system should con- tact BCAA’s Technical and Consumer Advisory at 289- 2122. Thus, he says social and service agencies and com- munity interest groups should consider more volun- teer chauffeur programs so that the elderly can engage in activities free of transporta- tion worries. The Safety of Elderly Drivers — Yesterday’s Young in Today’s Traffic, will soon be available in ma- jor book stores and public libraries across B.C. Copies can be ordered from Transaction Publishers, Rutgers, the State University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S.A. 08903. The cost is $19.95 (U.S.) or $24.
