18 - Sunday, May 6, 1999 - North Shore News his has been a very good week for the talented North Shore resident and film director, Tom Rowe. Joy Metcaife tells all ... Tom is a partner in the recently-opened Pacific Motion Pictures company and has worked on the locally-produced films Who’s Harry Crumb with John Candy, and the adventure comedy Bird on a Wire with Goldie Hawn and Me! Gibson, which opens in Vancouver on May 18. He also worked on the just-wrapped new TV movie, Passing Through Veils or Memories of Murder. This suspense drama stars Nancy Allen from Robo-cop, Robin Thomas, Olivia Brown, Vanity (ihat’s a per- son, not a fault!), and Vancouver’s handsome Peter Yunker. It must have been a good, satis- fying experience for actress Nancy Allen. She got married in the mid- dle of the shoot to her fiance, Los Angeles’ Richard Waner... But back to Tom Rowe, the good news is tha: he has just won the prestigious Certificate of Merit Award presented by the Chicago International Film Festival. He won it for his direction of the tele- vision drama, Three Vagabonds, which aired last September on CBC-TV and which will air again on the CBC network this summer. Tom, of course, was thrilled! The Chicago Film Festival is one of the oldest in North America, and the competition is very stiff. Congratulations! Well, the truth about Run, ac- cording to publicist Darryl Wright, is that, in an amicable and mutual- ly agreeable parting of the ways, leading lady Tracey Pollen is no longer with the movie. Despite dyeing her hair and darkening her complexion with heavy make-up, she just wasn’t right for this particular part, though she tried very hard to make it work. The movie is on a week- long hiatus while they find a new female star, make story revisions, and allow time for male star Patrick Dempsey's lip to heal after a motorcycle accident! With other movie news, there’s a great cast line-up for It, the new mini-series that will include Richard Thomas, Annette C’Toole, John Ritter and Tim Curry, the hit from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Possibly joining them will be Harry Ander- son from the TV series Night Court... whe Phil Johnson, former CKLG- er-turned promotions man, was the emcee at the seventh annual Inter- national Foundation for the Arts do at the Hotel Vancouver last Friday night. Barry Scott was auctioneer, and had a little help from CKNW’s Biil Good and Mayor Gerdon Camp- bell. The gala had been organized by Bob Scragys and his buddy, Brian Calder, and Bob became so caught up in the spirit of the auction that he ended up winning the bidding war for a trip for two to London for $6,000!... MLA Grace McCarthy won $100 in a ducky draw and promptuy turned it back over to the Interna. tional Foundation. 2CAVIAR But the highlight of the evening was the outstanding performance by the brilliant violinist, 18-year- old Corey Ceroveek, and his sister, pianist Katja Cerovsek. There were strolling violinists throughout the ballroom and an orchestra played later for dancing, which I’m told, got Education Minister Tony Brummet onto the dance floor into the wee small hours... The very next night, again at the Hotel Van, it was the Vancouver Museum's fundraising Black and White Ball and it couldn't have been more successful!
