These centres give parents and caregivers a place to relax and meet other adults while children under five are being professionally supervised in a separate room. **Mothers are always telling me what u lifesaver the drop-ins are. They make important adult contacts and the children make friends,’’ explains Li Boesen, the coordinator of the program. Bocsen used to par- ticipate in the drop-ins with her two little ones before she started running the centres, so she knows from experience that the drop-ins serve a vital function. , ‘*Not only do caregivers need time alone to renew their spirits and enjoy other adults, but children need creative play and the company of other children,”’ she adds. The centres are run by the North Shore Family Ser- vices Society and have been so successful that an eighth drop-in centre has recently opened in Horse- shoe Bay. Boesen says the program is designed to promote intellectual, emotional, creative and social growth through free play activity. She explains further: ‘‘The idea is that youngsters can take important steps to independence while giving the adults a break from childcare. Meanwhile the caregivers can relax in a nearby room, make new friends, and have a cup of coffee. In addition, ! occa- sionally line up speakers on topics of interest for parents of young children,” Modern square dancing is fun right from the start and more progressive moves are learned as a dancer gains experience. Village Squares member and caller Brian Murdoch says, ‘‘Bring a friend or come alone, enjoy the fun, meet some active people and have a few refreshments as well.” Pre-register or go to the first There is no pre-registration necessary for the drop- ins which cost $2.50 to $3, depending on the session.
