FINE TEAS Murchie’s means quality] THE NAME Murchie’s and Robson Street have been inseparable for decades, What began as one man’s quest to bring quality tea to the West Coast frontier in 1894 has blossomed into a thriving network of stores selling fine teas and cof- fees throughout the Lower Mainland and Victoria. John Murchie, a tea-blending immigrant from Scotland, began it all in New Westminster by home- delivering tea by horse and bugay to discriminating tea drinkers. Forty-five years ago a Murchie's tetail outlet was opened by two of John Murchie's sons at 1008 Rob- son Street. John and Gwen Murchie opened a Murchie’s store at Park Royal in 1962. In 1967 the couple purchased the Robson store from James Murchie, who retired at age Five years ago the original Rob- son Street store was closed and a new, larger store was opened at 970 Robson Street. Today the Murchie’s network has grown to six stores. The stores are supported by a production plant and office complex located at 1200 Homer Street. The coffee is roasted at a facility located at 825 Beach Avenue. The stores focus on providing a wide-ranging selection of pure Arabica bean coffees and an exotic array of teas. With flavored coffees and teas in high demand, Murchie’s is responding to the market with the introduction of new flavored coffees including French Vanilla and Hazlenut Cream. In the realm of flavored teas, customers can choose from mango to strawberry flavored teas. . Murchie’s staff undergo a two- week training session to familiarize themselves with the products car- tied. In addition to the management team in place, the Murchie’s sto: continues on in the family way wit Gwen Murchie's two daughters ac- tively involved in the business. Twenty-six-year-old Sherri Lightheart oversees the stores and staff training as the store operations manager.
