Fireboat needed, says city A FIREBOAT is essential to the waterfront) industries in North Vancouver and should be provided by the Vancouver Port Corpora- tion, says North Vancouver City Council. At Monday's meeting, council directed staff to prepare a resolu- tion for a conference of the Feder- ation of Canadian Municipatities to recommend the port corpora- tion provide a harbor fire boat, In presenting the motion, Ald. Frank Morris noted the two grain elevators on the waterfront ase in- accessible from tard in the event of a fire. With the loss of the Van- couver fire boat, the elevators are in jeopardy, he said. “A fire boat is desperately necded,’' said Morris in presenting the motion, ‘We were dependent onthe Vancouver fire boat.” | The Vancouver fire boat stopped operating as of December, 1987. The city said the cost was too high to justify retaining it. Morris argued the Vancouver Port Corporation ‘‘has a major re- sponsibility in this regard** because it owns the land bordering the harbor. Ald. Stella Jo Dean agreed the federal corporation should provide the service. , “Tenants pay money to the Vancouver Port Corporation, and it should certainly provide fire protection instead of leaving it to the municipalities.""
