ON DEC. 12, Kari Nicholls started receiving letters from her Japanese
pen pals. Now, after a flood of mail, the 16-year-old Grade 10 North
Vancouver student is appealing for help in responding to 47 letters from

fellow students in Japan.

Girl overwhelmed

by pen pal mail

KARI NICHOLLS has more
friends than she ever ex-
pected.

The 46-year-old Sutherland Sec-
ondary School student volunteered
for a program in which Japanese
students exchange letters with Ca-
nadian students.

But Nicholls said she’s over-
whelmed by the response: 47 letters
have been received thus far.

She’s written three letters and
friends have helped with another
16. But there’s still another 28 let-
ters -o go. So Nicholls is appealing
to the public to lend a hand.

“I've tried but I’ve got too
many,’” said the Grade 10 student.

She said she'd like to respond to
all of the letters, but she can’t af-
ford the time away from her class
homework.

“It really is worthwhile to have
a pen pal in another country. You
can learn quite a bit about another
culture. I’ve learned Japanese say-
ings 2nd about the schools there,’’
she said.

Nicholls said the age range of
her Japanese pen pals is from 13 to
21

She said all are interested in
learning about Canada.

‘The pen pal program was orga-
nized through the International
English Academy.
