24 - Wednesday, September 25, 1985 - North Shore News FISHIN’ POLE Natives’ decision helps out fishery LAST WEEK 1 mentioned the early Native Food Fish- ery on the Nanaimo River which was jeopardizing the Chinook brood stock so badly needed at the Nanaimo River Hatchery. By GEORGE NOSKY After Federal Fisheries had given the band three days per week of netting with the first catch September 13-16, a reap- praisal of the situation was done by the Native Band. On Friday, September 20, the Nanaimo Indian Band informed Federal Fisheries that they would postpone their net fishery until the Hatchery receives their quota of Chinook eggs or the Nanaimo River rises dramatically to allow escapement of Salmon stocks to the natural spawn- ing beds. This decision will be reviewed cach week by the band and D.F.O. I congratulate the Nanaimo Indian Band! This foresight can only help in the rebuilding process on the river. Maybe the band can participate in the surplus of Coho that returns to the Big Qualicum. | know this idea might be mixing in politics but really, the whole Native fishery must be reviewed. Two weeks ago I promised technique regarding bucktailing. Although I love all methods of angling there is nothing as exciting as a fighting-mad Coho attacking a surface trolled Ny. Remember that everything in this sport is done at high speed. Using light line and rods your drag a large fly across the surface three times normal trolling speed. At times at speeds up to eight knots. A good bucktailing rod is nine to 10 feet in length and is a fast, light action. 1 like a single-action reel such as a Longstone; four inch Peetz; or Daiwa 375 packed with one hundred yards of dacron backing and three hundred yards of top quality, fifteen-pound nylon line. Heavier line creates too much line drag. The flies can be made of deer or bear hair with the best and most expensive be- ing mace of dyed polar bear hair. These latter flies can be hard toifind but will give you years of service. See Bucktailing Page 25 MSRP. Dealer may sett for ies. Freight exctu ted.
