After 35 years on the job, though, Hallaway deserves a tropical vacation. He joined the fire department at 13th and St. Gearges in 1950, and since that time he says “things have changed so much."* The East 13th firehall used to cover both City and District, Hallaway explains, until 1954 when the District started their own firehail. And an ambulance service was offered until the gov- ernment took it over in °75,. Although the fire station hasn't changed locations since 195(t, a new building was built beside the old one in °72 to suit todays modern heavy equipment. ‘‘The old firehall was too small. Trucks have changed — they're bigger, heavier now."' Hallaway served in the army for three years before he decided to become a fireman, and his curiosity took him from there. ‘*f was always interested in com- munity work. My image of a firefighter was high, exciting — you never know what's going to happen.’’ He feels his army training PACKING up his betong- ings, Fire Chief Raj. Haliaway put in his last official day Friday, after 35 years at the North Vancouver City Fire Department. Deputy Chief J.R. Meldrum will take over as chief, and Senior Captain Douglas. The army training definitely helped.** Hallaway went through a rigorous three-month train- ing period when he started out as a fireman, but says “the training is a lot more sophisticated now,” adding that ‘‘it’s like any job — it’s more complicated now than it used to be.** Bookwork, officer pro- motion school and chemical hazard training are some of the more indepth areas covered, which progress and’ change have required. For example, Hallaway | says, “Smoke is more toxic now, with chemicats and plastics being used more, and breathing apparatus is far more important. Every man has a mask, instead of one or two being available for everyone,”’ . Back in the ’50s, a plat- hour sessions. Es FASHION + FOOD TRAVEL chief toon (or shift) consisted of four days of work, three days off, and four nights of work, Hallaway explains, compared to now when the men work two days, two nights and then take four days off. Hallaway says one of the benefits of the fireman's job is the comraderie between the men. *‘You eat and sleep together and rely on each other as a team. It’s a com- bination of a lot of things — friendship, pride, satistac- tion, spirit and loyalty. Oh, not all firefighters love each other, but they stick together. 1 suppose it has something to do with always facing danger and surviving it.” . Talking about the fire department as a_ whole, Hallaway says it’s a small department, but an ag- gressive one. ‘‘On a regular call we haven’: got people: coming in for a backup, that’s jt, so we can’t stand back and be defensive. On the average apartment fire we go in quickly, attack it and knock it down: fast. There’s a real satisfaction when you've put out a fire, you really accomplish some- thing."’ Due to his seniority, See page C3 § Bring in this ad for 1 extra session. ree BENG
