FOR SOME PEOPLE, getting into a hole could be
a problem, but for visitors to the British Columbia
Museum of Mining, it might be an exciting ex-

perience.

The museum, located at
Britannia Beach, offers guid-
ed train tours, with hard-hats
included, of the mine tunnel
below the museum. Condi-
tions and equipment in the
1,200 foot (366 m.) tunnel
reflect the days of early
hardrock mining. Besides
demonstrations of drilling.
blasting, mucking and
slushing, methods of rock
stabilization are shown in the
authentic atmosphere.

After passing 130
through the tunnel, the
visitor emerges from the
North Portal to inspect an
authentic wilderness dia-
mond drill camp and core
sheds. Then there is a tour of

the Concentrator building,
which is where 7000 tons of
ore was processed daily at
operating peak.

A Mining House, built of
rough cedar, with old beams
from an early machine shop
at the Britannia Mine, is
divided into galleries to
feature in chronological
order or development, the
native use of metals, the
story of coal, gold, and base
metals, and the
transportation used by the
mining industry.

The latest addition to the
museum is an exhibit entitl-
ed “Britannia - the story of a
British Columbia Mine”. The
display tells the story of the
