After running all the way from Kelowna, one would have thought that Al Howie would be ready to hang up his running shoes and stop when he gets to the North Shore. But for the ultramarathon runner, his scheduled stopover in North Van- couver Wednesday-—will just be a brief break in a run that Ultramarathoner in sie ig | ; " N. Van will end in Courtenay this In a unique addition to the B.C. Summer Games, Howie is running 540 miles in 10 days bearing a message from the site of last year’s games, Kelowna, to the opening ceremonies of this year’s games on the Island. Howie is one of the few men in the world capable of : on ‘ x :% v ve . this feat as he is the world record holder in consecutive running. ° He will also be remem- bered as the man who ran 139 miles earlier this year in the 24-hour relay event at Swangard Stadium. Pledges from Howie's run will benefit the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation, which aids the disabled throughout the province. Gearing up for Games The scenic Comox Valley will provide a_ colorful backdrop this weekend for Canada’s largest annual sporting event, the B.C. Summer Games. The fourth edition of this annual event will see 3,321 athletes—the largest con- tingent in the Games’ history—compete in 33 events spread over four days of excitement from August 27 to August 30. This year marks the first time the provincial event has been held on Vancouver Island—and also the first ume more than one com- munity has taken on the difficult task of organizing a sports gathering that in terms of numbers competing is larger than either the Canada Games or the Commonwealth Games. The city of Courtenay, the town of Comox and the village of Cumberland—plus surrounding electoral areas and Canadian Forces Base Comoxz—have joined forces and come up with several thousand volunteers to make sure the 1981 games will be the best yet for competitors and spectators. One of the main goals of tne B.C. Summer Games is “to stimulate enthusiasm and participation in amateur sports in order to achieve a higher level of physical fitness throughout the province.” Secondary to that goal, it could have been added that the games spark a _ con- siderable amount of par- ticipation and enthusiasm in the communities that stage them. “Total Community Par- ticipation” has been the motto of the Comox Valley games and of its mascot “Cappy TCP” played by Courtenay resident and well- known actor Sid Williams. Ten volunteer directors, elected a year ago, have been organizing thousands of volunteers to provide security and medical ser- vices, accomodation, food, opening ceremonies, transportation, publicity and a host of other services, both large and small. The Comox Valley games will present a_ serjes of “firsts”, apart from its Vancouver Island location and the number of com- munities involved. These will be the first B.C. Summer Games to have its own official theme song— Join the Games—vritten by Valley musician Edwin Grieve and chosen over 18 other entries in a contest held earlier this year. Another first will be the running of the Terry Fox Memorial 1,500 metre wheelchair race. Disabled sports are being highlighted at the game; because 1981 is the Year of the Disabled in B.C. The Terry Fox race will be open to both men and women wheelchair athletes who will be racing the metric mile for a special trophy, as well as medals. That event is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, about 3:10 p.m. on the games track. That track is also another first, at least for the Valley, which unti! now has had no proper venue to stage track and fieid events. The new eight-lane = rubberized-surf- ace track is “state of the art” and should provide a first- class venue for races. After 4,000 athletes and guests enjoy a special barbecue, they'll begin joining up in groups for the march-in onto the field.
