. DearEditor::..2... ' Victoria’s:bid ‘to have our B.C.’ Government ownéd “corporations -freed from federal taxafion.is ill ad- ‘vised. It is ‘downright damaging from a nation building point‘of view. Also it could hammer’ private enterprise into the ground! What if British Columbia - succeeds..-in the _-courts? -Provincial crown -cor- porations would only pay privincial income, sales and other taxes. What a temp- tation! Province after province would set up crown corporatons in order to keep their provincial wealth at home. oo. The rush to provincialize (and therefore socialize) would be on. The richest industries would be fair game. Their profits would no .longer be shared across the country. As with those of the B.C. Petroleum corporation they would end up in provincial treasuries, those of Queens Park and Quebec ‘provinces ‘Cityincluded. _ Socializing our major growth industries is bad enough. But a rush by the to keep their internally generated profits all to themselves strikes at the basis of Confederation. Ottawa’s role in “spreading the wealth” would be un- dermined. The “have not” provinces would be in worse shape and there would be more recrimination, Quebec against “the rest” and, the Maritimes against Ontario. Trim Ottawa back byall. means. But don’t set the stage for provincialization on a large scale.. Don't destroy private enterprise in the process. That is what will happen if crown companies like B.C. Hydro, I.C.B.C. and the B.C. Development Corporation don't have to pay‘ federal taxes. They could take over and destroy . Canada in the process. Jack Davis, MLA North Van-Seymour ‘McCarthy ‘breaking down’ society | Dear Editor: It is surprisingly difficult to find anything positive to say about Welfare Minister Grace McCarthy other than that she was instrumental seven years ago in selling a lot of five-dollar (for four years) Social Credit memberships. So it is time for her to. come up with something cnstructive -— which she promises to do in the spring - - by introducing legislation in order to allow judges to make delinquent husbands pay to support their families. In the meantime, however, mother and children are caught. in the crossfire and the family further eroded by Mc- Carthy’s cruel programme of forcing reluctant, frightened mothers and their precious children apart by ordering them out of the home to take yet another job. Finally, Mrs. McCarthy is guilty of helping to break down otr society's very foundation -- which is based on the family. She has set a dangerous and narrow precedent by placing more importance on money than on the love and care of a mother for her children. Absentee landlords | to blame Dear Editor: if the Hamilton Fell area has become a “crime ridden sium” we have the. absentee landlords to bisame, as they have intentionally planned and engineered its domisc. By deliberately allowing their properties to fall into disrepair and by renting, on purpose, to unsavory tenants, they hope to drag down the area to the point where Council will “have” to approve rezoning. And at that point in time they hope to make a hefty profit by selling their property to dévolopers. Anyone who doubts my conclusions only has to osk himself one question.
