Canadian homes are. heated
more efficiently than
anywhere else in the western
world except Sweden, an
expert on energy con-
servation said Wednesday.

homes in the West, followed
by Canada, with West
Germany in third place.

Schipper told a meeting of
the American ‘Association
for the Advancement of
Science that: Americans
were saving the equivalent of ©
four to five million barrels‘of
oil a day because of con”
servation. That was
annual ‘saving of about 10
per cent of the energy used |

“The marketplace
stimulated encouraging
energy savings between 1972
and 1978,” he said. “Con-
sidering that they were
largely unplanned, these
results seem remarkable .

“Advances..in energy-
conscious architecture and
remedial techniques, such as
finding and sealing leaks in
existing buildings, will
probably mean that
residential energy con-
sumption will hardly in-
crease at all, and may fall in
the near’ future in key
developed countries.”

in several
countries for the

He said he had found
many countries. were using
much less energy for central
heating than'they did several
years ago. In the  nor-
theastern U.S., Sweden and
West Germany, oil savings
ranged from 15 to 25 per
cent, and the U.S. and
Prance had both
significantly reduced natural
gas consumption.

decontrol of cnergy prices
will push prices higher and
stimulate conservation. In
