TOKYO (UPI) - should not limit car exports to the United States until it is offficially determined that such sales are hurting the American auto industry, the president of the Nissan Motor Co. said Monday. “If Japanese car-makers impose self-restraints on exports (to the United States), it is tantamount to admitting that Japanese sales are hurting the U.S. in- dustry,” Takashi Ishihara told a news conference. PORT ELGIN, Ont. (UPC) - Automobile corporations have laid off thousands of workers and disrupted the lives of their families as they shift capital elsewhere to make money, says Canadian auto worker chief Bob White. White, Canadian director of the United Auto Workers, ‘also charged that Ontario industry minister Larry Grossman has made himself the “mouthpiece” of the auto industry since he has refused to introduce legislation requiring companies to justify major layoffs. The current auto sales slump has thrown about 27 ,000 Canadian workers out of work so far, with all but a few thousand of the layoffs in Ontario. “Now these companies know for certain that On- tano will not intervene to save jobs,” White said Thursday in an angry reaction to Grossman's refusal to introduce the legislation. “Grossman has made himself the mouthpiece for mulunational corporations whose size and sophisti- cation allow them to shift their capital around = to maximize profits,” White said. “Most of the operations that are being closed are profitable. ICs just that these compantes think they can make more money somewhere clsc,” he said. Industry analysts. said Ishihara’s statement was likely to prompt more U.S. demands for legislative curbs on Japanese auto imports. Tokyo government of- ficials have repeatedly urged Japanese automakers to “In the meantime they've disrupted lives, families, entire communities, often permanently.” White rebutted Gross- man’s argument that lfegis- lation protecting jobs would drive business out of the province, pointing to the examples of Sweden and West Germany where major layoffs must be justified to a public authority and unions must be consulted. In those countries “the same multinational cor- porations that are closing plants here are living comfortably with some very, very stringent legislation,” he said. ~ exercise restraints in exports of their small, fuel-efficient cars to the United States.
