STUDENTS AT Windsor Secondary School lined up for the photographers when they presented a cheque for $1,023.08 to Mary Lou Matthews, the speech pathologist supervisor ‘frill’ that FROM PAGE A16 help juveniles in trouble with the law. Bob Fairbridge, who heads Porteau Camp and who has developed its program since 1974, learned about the government’s decision only by reading the ads in Wednesday’s newspapers. Thursday, in the midst of writing a letter to protest the way the issue was handled, he paused to talk to the News. Among the things he talked about was Peter Plewerd. Plewerd, said Fairbndge, considered his time at Porteau Camp among the brightest sparks of success in his life. He left the camp, went home and cleaned up his act He kept in touch with the staff, letting them know how he was doing and how the cx pernence of the camp was enabling him to fit back into the community Plewerd went to work ona fish boat When the boat returned to harbor, he volunteered to stay aboard while the others celebrated a successful catch When the crew returned he had disappeared His body was found a week later floatung under the wharf where the boat had been ticd up A small fund) about $700 was Collected by the people of the town where the events o> curcd and donated to Porteau Camp in) Plewerd’s hame and an cecognition of the benefit of the camp Fatrbridge accepted Itre moncy but instead of buying equipment for the wihderness camp be cstablished a trust fund The capital was in vested with the mnterest drawn otf every year ta be donated foo aw chacity chasecn by the Wining team ti sate ge COULTER POE UDTOUEDS The teest ott pe tition was held bast veat aid the woiners decided to donate the mtcrest $0 to the Ronald Mian Pooralad bhowuse results gets Fairbridge says one of his personal priorities is to keep the Plewerd Fund going in some form. But it is inevitable that the fund, like the camp itself, will be changed dramatically as the government goes ahead with the sale of the service, currently operated by the cor- rections branch. Fairbridge said he had been expecting the sale since the rumor mill started work- ing last August, but that he was surprised he was not in- formed of the decision before it was publicly announced. “‘l had known,’” he said, “‘that the government restraint program —- for lack of a better phrase -—— would certainly affect us in some way He doesn't not know, he said, on what basis the pro gram will operate in’ the -future nor what will happen to the nine staff Porteau ( amp (The staff members have been with the Attorney General's Department anywhere from sin to bate bridge's 20 years ) Despite the fact that it's been 10 years since he took charge of Porteau Camp and began developing the pro gram that ts now in place, Fartbndge said the govern ment has no legislated man date to keep the facility open “We're a frill, for want of a better word.) he saad “They're not) obligated to run the programm even though there was ancy aluation done who run last year that shaws we are cf festive in dealing with jusentibes Dusting a normal voar van Basrbordge 200) juvenile of tenders are ordered tothe camp by the Courts Phe cost foe a year scp nations ors SIRO CHD Phe program worn tbe prosided any cheaper he sand of the antended sabe to PePvale Cte nests Ob a carn rye apre ney I will downsize the core tion tera ches staff Bat res rot proarig foo be ay oe apes ° Al? - Sunday, January 15, 1984 - North Shore News SIS $ < z N goypmnes is NEWS photo Elisworth Dickson at Lions Gate Hospital.
