Wednesday, April 19, 2000 — North Shore News - 27 .G. yet to meet solid waste reduction target BRITISH Columbians and their local govern- ments have reduced the amount of solid waste headed to land- filis. Further effort will be required to meet the 50% reduction target, Environment, Lands and Parks Minister Joan Sawicki said recently. The minister’s comments follow the release of the 1997-1998 B.C. municipal solid waste tracking report indicating that — British Columbians have achieved a total reduction of 36% in the per. capita amount of solid waste requiring disposal compared with the disposal rate in 1990. In 1990, the province implemented. a 10-year strat- egy with the goal of reducing that amount by half by the year 2000. ‘The target for solid waste reduction in tha province remains at 50% of the 1990 ‘levels, and the ministry’s continued expectation for each regional district is that it will continue to pursue new ways to reduce its waste stream. The 3R efforts of reduce- . reuse-recycle by producers ~and sellers of products, con- sumers and all levels of gov- -<@rmment have provided the basis: for the largest reduc- tions so far. * Examples of voluntary and. government-regulated industry product stewardship programs implemented . in the province include: @@ used car and truck tire col- fection and recycling pro- gram,’ which’ has diverted nearly: -24 million scrap tires _ since 1991; . In addition, a previous cross-country survey indi- cates 38% of B.C. households are composting their waste — the highest percentage of any province. In 1991, British Columbians only recycled 2% of the organic waste they produced. “In addition to imple- menting new programs, we invent FLATBED SCANNER . A problem avoid- ed is better than a problem solved.” The report was prepared under contract to the min- istry by the Recycling Council of B.C. Its primary goal was to monitor the amount of solid waste which is disposed of (landfilled or incinerated) in cach regional district and the province as a whole. The report also covers the amount and type of materials recycled where this informa- tion is available.
