T also observed garbagemen routinely encountering, a can containing wet magazines or garden rocks weighing in excess of 80 Ib, One writer suggested garbagemen should simply test the cans and if they're too heavy, tag and leave them. First, ata rate of four to. six cans/minute it’s impossible to test the weight cach time. Second, while tagging is appropriate, many garbagemen would rather put their backs at risk picking up the heavy load rather than risk irate callers complaining to city hail. How often have you left something heavy or awkward and because your garbageman is a nice guy, they've taken it away for you? In addition, ygarbagemen daily cncounter other health risks from objects such as nee- dles and syringes left in garbage. Asa resident, I too was a bit surprised when our garbage was tagged. Having said this, I have concerns about the garbage cans that are now deemed illegal size. Many people across the North Shore own these wheeled cans with a tight-fit- ting lid system. They are good for keeping wildlife and stray animals from getting into and spreading garbage. We alf have concerns about bears, raccoons, etc. Seniors living at home or alone may not be able to pick up and carry garbage cans to the roadside due to failing health and Hauling rubbish a heavy job izes the understand change. Municipalities that have gone the route of semi-mecha- nized handhnag have shown lange reductions in injuries (and usually in overall operating costs). Some of the writers may feel differently if it was their 28- year-old son who as a garbage- man was suffering premature recurring back problems. As with any change, it could have been implemented bette, it requires education fer all concerned, and it will be met with resistance by some. I know fora fact that our total weekly garbage weighs between 18 and 20 pounds, about the same weight that any mother has to carry around when she has a small child. I believe the cans have a limit of 44 pounds. Where will these garbage cans end up? At the transfer station, which doesn't really meet our recycling and reducing agenda. Is there be 2 compromise such as a fill-to- this-line on our cans? Please get over this hurdle and con- tinue with the fine service that our tax dollars pay for. Darlene McIntosh North Vancouver
