Aitire halts court ‘date Bob Mackin Contributing Writer WAS it a passive protest or was it all he had to wear Wednesday morn- ing? Only knows. The 56-year-old accused child pornogra- pher showed up at North Vancouver provincial court wearing tight black shorts, black socks and shoes and a black T-shirt. Emblazoned across his chest was the word “whatever” in bold, white letters. Whatever the mative, it kept him trom appear- ing betore Judge D-.E. Moss. He waited outside a courtroom until defence lawyer Victor Svacek and Crown counsel Leslie Burrell mutually decided against inviting him inside. The reason? He was ‘improperly attired.” Burrell said Richer’s appearance was inappro- priate, especially since a group of clementary school students ana field trip was siting near the front. Moss agreed with the request and told Svacek his client's next date is Oct. 28. Richer was arrested Sept. 16 and charged with = possession and making child pornogra- phy, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault of a male under 14 vears of age. When he was released fram) custody on bail Sept. 25, the sexual assault, touching and interference — charges were dropped. Police searched Richer’s room at a house in the 400-block East 2nd in North Vancouver in late August. Three constables found more than 100 videotapes in the room. According to a search warrant, Richer told the police that the tapes were “of males engaged in sexual activity,” but were “all legal.” Before Richer was teleased, Judge Jane Auxier prohibited Richer from going to places where children gather — playgrounds, schools, public swim- ming pools, community centres and public libraries. Richer, who worked as a security guard and delivered the News in Deep Cove, was also prohibited from contact- ing anyone under 18 or possessing video or still photography — equip- ment. Richer stopped work- ing for the News in August. Marck Richer Friday.
