A SMARTIES TH TOE UEE TUN PSASSOSLOPE PONGD Dear Editor: How relieved the people of West Vancouver must be io know that their local bureaucrats stand ready to protect them from the trauma of exposure to the sight of the depictions of the nude female body (West Van says no to nudes, March 6 North Shore News}. May I iake it then, that we of the more ten- der sensibilities will also be protected from the sight of works by such deviants as Michelangelo by ripping the pages out of any - offending encyclopedias, or better still, have a book-burning in the grand old style. Surely, to be serious abcut this, most of us are beyond the point where we might believe the sight of the representation of the female body on canvas is going to inflame the carnal Decision defended passion of any but the most deranged male. What we must put this down to is the pater- nal and patronizing attitude of people in pub- lic office who use the power of that office to inflict their views upon the community as a whole. It is especially saddening to think that they seem to have no compunction about taking away our right to decide for ourselves what we would or would not view. Of course this situa- tion could only arise as long as there is a gov- emmment monopoly in the provision of library services. In a free market competitive situation the customer would be the arbiter of quality. Not some grey-faced bureaucrat. Bill Tomlinson Nort Vancouver fine person with an outstanding recend of coramunity service. I suppent her judgment in this Peay " LE It’s time to get on your guard, parents Dear Editor: It appears there are a number of parents who do not want to take any responsibility for their children. The Jatest example is the school guard crossing controversy. Many parents strongly believe it is a matter of when, not if a child is injured on route to school. However, { have hot yet seen one volunteer crossing guard. While no one wants to see a child injured, these are your children, not the govem- ment’s, not the school board’s, not city hall’s and not mine. Organize volunteer crossing guards, car and/or walking pools, and teach your chil- dren traffic safety the same as you teach them how to protect themselves from other dangers. Will you be able to forgive yourseif or take consolation in pointing fingers and : saying I told you so if your child is injured? Mary Ann McDevitt North Vancouver What's happening in our District Public Hoaring on Dear Editor: The front page cf your March 6 edition contains a photograph of an artist holding an innocuous painting of a nude, Next to it is a story indi- cating the artist is “irked by West Vancouver Memorial Library’s apparent ‘no-nudes’ arts display policy.” are aware that the painting shown is one that was approved for exhibit at the library, not rejected? So much for the no- nudes policy. This and other misleading or inaccurate aspects of the article wouldn’t disturb me were it not for the fact they reflect unfairly on our visual arts coordinator. This is unfortunate because she is a unfortunate little matter; in fact the ultimate decision to reject some of the artist’s works was mine.
