This week: beach desserts. Tip No. 1: Sand does not mix well with creme caramel, pecan pie, Death By Chocolate or any other sweet aprés entrée item. Tip No. 2: Children combined with sand in any proportions will result in varying amounts of sand ending up in anything edible with- in a 50-metre radius. Tip No. 3: When dining out incorporates a takeout meal, pur- chased perhaps at Capers’ excel- lent delicatessen and consumed at a nearby West Vancouver beach, participants should plan on searching out desseris at a location far from any sand-covered beach- like surfaces — L‘Arte del Gelato, for example. In this authentic Italian gelato emporium, beach bums, Italian- style bicycle racers, Table Hoppers, summer dessert seekers and other discerning diners can digest any number of scoops of real Italian gelato (ice-cream for the chronically unilingual) from the menu of grand gelatorian Gianni Bombelli. L’Arte has been in West Vancouver for about three years and its profile among ice-cream aficionados continues to rise. But it has not always been thus. ice-cream, you see, is taken far more seriously in Italy than it is in Tiddlycove. Or was. Through L‘Arte, Bombelli has spearheaded the education of the gelato-illiterate folk of the North Shore to the finer characteristics of ice-cream Italian-style. When he first opened L’Arte, Bombelli says price was the over- riding concern for local ice-cream eaters. His gelatos were more expen- sive than those of competing ice- cream parlors, ' where dollops of commercial ice-cream heaped upon cones sold on the strength of heft alone. The subtleties of fine gelatos were known to few north of Burrard Inlet. But Bombelli, who spent many years in his native Italy selling ice- cream-making machinery and oth- enwise immersed in that country’s gelato mystique before taking the plunge in West Vancouver and opening his own gelato parlor, persevered. Quality, he figured, would pre- vail. Andi it has. lian gelato beats the summer heat NEWS photo Paul McGrath MONDO GELATO ... Michelle Quilici (front), Gianni Bombelli (centre) and Ruben Vivar present a heap of italian ice cream at West Varicouver’s L’Arie dei Gelato. L’Arte’s gelatos (there are about two dozen varieties ranging from mango to fruitti di bosco to tiramisu, marzapane, cioccolato and pistacchio) are all made on the premises using natural ingredi- ents: eggs, egg yolks, cream, fresh fruit and fresh fruit juices, milk and dextrose. They contain less fat (from 0% for limone to 9% for hazelnut) and Jess sugar than regular commercial ice-creams. They also contain no preserva- tives and “no air,” which Bombelli says is whipped into regulation ice-cream in copious amounts. Good and good for you, sayeth Signoro Bombelli, especially for bicycle racers and other athletic folk. But enough techno-gelato pat- ter: into the ice-cream. Regular cones at L “Arte are $2.25 for a single and $3.25 for a double scoop; Waffle cones are $2.75 for single and $3.75 fora double.
