The greening
of Hollywood

Hot Shots! **% (20th Century Fox) Rated Mature (at the Park &
Tilford, Granville, Station Square, Scott 72, Coquitlam and Clearbrook
cinemas)

T HAD to happen. Hollywood has become so green-
conscious, we now have Enviro-laughs and Eco-medy.

Airplane!, the first ZAZ (Zucker,
Abrahams, Zucker) hit, had outra-
geous puns, random parodies of
unrelated genres and Lloyd
Bridges. Hot Shots! has fewer
puns, the usual lampoons and
Lloyd Bridges. If that isn’t reduc-
ing, recyling and reusing, then
God didn’t make little blue boxes.

This time the problem is a hot-
dogging loner named Topper
Harley (Charlie Sheen) who suffers
from PCS (Parental Conflict Syn-
drome).

His dad, the best pilot in the
force, was responsible for another
flyer ending up as a hunter’s head
trophy (in a bizarre but funny se-
quence of misadventures). Twenty
years later, the accident haunts
Topper, triggering anxiety attacks
in mid-flight.

His squadron is rife with the
standard issue stereotypes — the
too-nice-to-survive ‘‘Dead Meat’’
(William O'Leary), wall-eyed
“Washout” Gon Cryer), and
Gregory Kent (Cary Elwes), his stiff
competition in the air and on the
ground.

The sizzling (literally) object of
Kent and Harley's rivalry is the
staff psychiatrist/lounge torch
singer/Olympic gymnast/horse
champion and skilled spot welder,
Ramada Thompson (Valerie
Golino).

Like all of the ZAZ parodies,
there's a lot of hit and miss mate-
rial, but this time there seems to
be more duds than usual. (Some-
one should hit that “Mother of
all ...”’ line over the head with a

shovel and bury it in the woods.)

The Gulf War is just too fresh to
be a laugh-getter.

Hilarious bits include Lloyd
Bridges as wingy Admiral Tug
Bensen and a hysterical 9% Weeks
spoof that will surely cripple any
future sexy food eating scenes.

Still, following so soon on the
superior heels of Naked Gun 2%,
Hot Shots! flies, but on automatic
pilot.

If you thought the Gulf War was
funny, wait until you see Stanley
Kramer's grim comedy about
dropping the Big One. A mad U.S.
General (Sterling Hayden) decides
to save our ‘precious bodily
fluids'’ from commie takeover and
it’s up to Peter Sellers (in three
roles) to stop the renegade planes
from striking Mother Russia.

With Sellers’ brilliant perfor-
mances and the witty intertwining
of sex and war, the cold war never
looked so silly or so horrific.
