Getting the most out of your car begins when vou start the engine. Most engine wear occurs in the first few seconds that the engine is running. This is because the engine oil, which lubricates vital parts, takes a second or so to circulate around the engine. Don't rev up your engine right after starting it. Let it idle for a few seconds and then drive off gently. This is especially important during the wintertime when the oil is colder and takes longer to reach its proper operating temperature. If you have power steering, try to avoid turning the steering wheel while the car is stationary, Even though power steering systems are capable of turning the front wheels while the car is not mov- ing, this places an undue strain on the front suspension and tires. If you're sandwiched in a tight parking space. try moving the car foward slightly, then backwards slightly while you turn the wheel. Even a little forward and backward movement is better than none. Automatic (ransmissions are pretty difficult to abuse, but Greg Wilson AUTOMOTION manual! transmissions and clutches can wear out quickly if not treated with respect. When you're changing into a higher gear, let the engine speed drop off a little before you place it into gear. Conversely, when you're changing into a lower gear, rev up the engine a litle before putting it into gear. Matching the engine speed with the transmission helps to reduce wear on both the transmission and engine. Modern cars, especially in the last 100 or 20 years, have much better brakes. Brakes are the most powerful part of the car now. And = much cheaper to replace than, say, a clutch or transmission.” On steep hills, it’s tempting to hold the car from rolling back by slipping the clutch. This is one sure way to wear out your clutch plate. Its better to use the brake pedal and/or parking brake be- fore Jetting out the clutch. In addition, don’t let vour left foot rest on the clutch pedal while driving. This can cause it to slip slightly and wear. Keeping your engine cool! is im- portant because a boiling radiator can lead to other, serious prob- lems, such as a warped cylinder head. In heavy traffic, keep an eye on your coolant temperature gauge or warning light. If it reaches the boiling point and your car is not moving, stip your transmission into neutral! -(while keeping your foot on the brake) and rev up the engine slightly.
