Teens need to consider cost of California trip IF YOU have kids graduating from high school this spring you'll be sick and tired of the word ‘‘California.’’ [ know I was! Fortunately, e'though the talk flew back and forth like a tennis ball, I don't remember any of them really going. You should have heard some of the plans, thouzh! One young couple, 18 years old, decided they were going to drive his beater all the way to California and back travel wise Barbara McCreadie (the thing would hardly make it to school! in the morning). They came to me for advice and, keeping a straight face with some difficulty, I plotted out d route for them. Her mother phoned me, very concerned that I had ‘‘encouraged them.” I explained that there were many ways of “discouraging”? them without making noises like an irate parent. By the time they began thinking of some of the costs in- volved, even for camp sites and hostels, they began to reconsider. We decided on spare parts that they should carry so that ‘‘if’’ they ran into car trouble the young man could do repairs. 1 didn’t bother to add that if the pile of junk made it as far as Aldergrove the Lord was truly cn their side. We decided that they should ap- ply immediately for a _ gasoline credit card, although I knew that any company who would grant them one must be staffed by chimpanzees. Emergency groceries were then discussed and | praised the merits of lots of pork and beans and tuna fish. ‘‘Amazing how far they'll go with a loaf of bread,’’ I said, noting that bread was very reasonably priced in the U.S. Kids used to three meals a day prepared by Mom in the kitchen have a true aversion to cold pork and beans no matter how many slices of bread they have to shove it down with. Anyway, California got lucky and didn’t have that pair of pen- niless teens clunking around. nat Back to California — it must truly be one of the wealthiest states in the Union. How else can they afford to give away their book “Discover the Californias’? I just received my copy in the mail and it’s a gorgeous publica- tion — there’s almost no advertis- ing and it’s full of valuable infor- mation. I lived there as a child, and half of my family (and all of my family history) is still there. Do go! A friend of mine is very anxious to visit and asked me for the best route. As always, there are plenty of options. © Fly both ways, using a Cana- dian airline. Rent a car while you're there (it’s the only sensible way to get around). ¢ Drive one way and fly the other, still using Canadian routes. I'd buy some sort of a car in Nova Scotia and plan to sell when I returned home (not the other way around). Motorists should be aware that their insurance will be jeopardized and they may be unprotected from claims arising in an automobile accident. If the vehicle is being operated contrary to the con- ditions of coverage, some common violations are:. 1. Operation of the vehicle for a different use than that insured for: (i.e. business or pleasure); 2. Operation of the vehicle in a different geographical ter- ritory than insured for; . Operation by an unlicensed or unqualified driver; . Driving in a race or speed test, or while avoiding arrest; . Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs; . The consequences of operating an automobile in violation of an I.C.B.C. policy are obviously very serious indeed if an accident results.
