AVOIDING HOLIDAY HASSLES 37 - Sunday, Decembe. 11, 1988 - North Shore News Going away for Xmas a great treat for mom LAST SATURDAY a friend and I spent the day shopping at Bellis Fair Mail. Christmas shopping. By the end of the day, she’d bought very little and I’d bought less. We were bone tired and completely discouraged. Later, with our feet up and a giass of nerve tonic in hand, we both agreed that the best Christmas we ever had was the year we took our families away for Christmas. They spent their holidays at a travel wise Barbara McCreadie SE ee resort in Mexico while we relaxed in Maui. Going away for Christmas is 2 treat every mother should allow herself at least once when the kids are still young enough that they won’t weep over leaving assorted heart-throbs behind. It relieves parents of zaost of the Christmas shopping — the trip itself is the major gift and most kids of elementary school age can accept that. We kept our shopping that year to one wrapped present per person plus the usual stocking stuffers. For once presents had time to be admired. It was a novelty to do our last- minute shopping in malls with palm trees strung with Christmas lights but ‘‘Dashing through the snow...’ seemed decidedly out of place. My friend was relieved of ail the household chores —- resorts are good for that —~ while I still had the usual meals to prepare. Anyone considering dining out with three kids in Hawaii, except occasionaliy, had better have more money than the McCreadies. However, a lot less is expected of the cook in a Hawaiian condo than here at home — for one thing, you do little or no entertain- ing. Anyway, here are a few pointers I picked up along the way for anyone lucky enough to get away this Christmas. And, for those who don’t, this year might be the time to make a decision about next Christmas — you've got a whole year to start saving. ner eIf you’re crossing a border with gifts for your family, bring them unwrapped. First, they’re easier to pack, but most impor- tant, customs and security officers are highly suspicious of any wrap- ped packages and always insist on opening them. HASTINGS TRAVEL.
