Squamish Band rejects new educational payment. formula

and the federal government, ‘band
representatives told® North -Van-
couver School Board recently.

‘In an interview, Joe said the
federal government scrapped the
original bill in 1986 after the B.C,
band chiefs complained about the
funding. formula. The . original
formula, signed in 1951, sent
money from the federal gov-
ernment: directly to the provincial

government.

The bands want the money sent
to them and want (o sign agree-
ments themselves with local school
boards, Joe said,

But he said the federal and pro-
vincial governments did not allow
band representatives into negotia-
tions and the new agreement. ai-
nounced this month changed only
the funding formula for computing
funds for cach status Indian stu-
dent in B.C,

The band's position is important
to the school board, Joseph said,
because the North | Vancouver
school district has numerous status
Indian students and therefore
receives large transfer payments
from the provincial government.

Joseph: said B.C. band repre-
sentatives opposed the new fun-
ding formula at a meeting on Van-
couver Island fast week,
